One of the many horror stories to come out of Suomussalmi was that of a female nurse the Finns captured.
Later, Virginia Cowles interviewed the inconsolable woman, as best as she could in between hysterical sobs:
The most amazing story of all was from the Russian nurse. This twenty-three-year-old girl, the only woman prisoner in Finland, was captured when the Finns routed the 163rd Division. She was a girl of medium size, with broad Slavic features and eyes which were filled with sadness. She wore a wool press provided for her by the Finns; her only other clothes were the menâs army uniform she had been wearing when captured.94
